Mavericks Overpay for Heywood

by The Boss on July 8, 2010

in Mavericks,Rumors

I guess when you can’t make a big splash in the off season, you overpay talent you already know. We saw that when the Hawks dropped 119 million on Joe Johnson, and now the Mavericks follow suit, giving center Brendan Haywood a 6 year deal worth 55 million dollars. Dallas heard the rumors of other contenders showing interest in the big man they traded for last season, and Mark Cuban made certain that he would have Haywood in a Dallas uniform for a while.

Another big man who is getting paid today is Jermaine O’ Neal. The former Heat center came to terms with the Boston Celtics, in essence taking the place of Rasheed Wallace. There’s another O’Neal that is still very much sought after, and could find himself with a contender. Shaq is reportedly interested in joining the Spurs, Heat, or Hawks. The Spurs have mutual interest, and all indications are both sides will try to work out a 2 year deal to pair Tim Duncan with Shaq.

Dirk Opts Out of Dallas?

by The Boss on May 22, 2010

in Mavericks,Rumors

News broke this afternoon via a ESPN.com report that Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki will indeed opt out of his contract, making him a free agent this summer. While the move is surprising to some, many close to the Mavericks organization felt this was indeed possible, and there is somewhat of a contingent “Plan B” in regards to Mark Cuban’s wish list should Dallas and Dirk part ways.

The suitors for Dirk’s talents will be long, and likely start with the New York Knicks. Mike D’Antoni dreams of creating potential matchup problems with Dirk in his lineup, and should New York also land another top flight perimeter scorer, they will instantly be playoff bound. The Heat would also draw interest with Dirk, as well as Cleveland, if they should lose LeBron to free agency.
