Coach K said it best in the post-game conference. “This was a classic. The toughest one and the best one”. Duke and Butler battled for 40 minutes last night, and while the Blue Devils edged out Butler 61-59 to win the national title, Butler has nothing to be ashamed about this morning. Playing in front of basically a home crowd in Indy, the Bulldogs went toe to toe with Duke, trading baskets and momentum throughout.
Kyle Singler was the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, as he came up with big play after big play on both ends of the court to help Duke stave off Butler late in the game. This Duke team was nowhere near the best that Coach K has had, but perhaps the hardest working. In the last 20 years, we have seen some all-time Blue Devil greats suit up for Duke, such as Bobby Hurley, Grant Hill, Shane Battier, Jay Williams, Trajan Langdon, and J.J Reddick. None of the guys on this title team have the stats to match up with them. They do have the will to win though.
In one of the least predictable college basketball tournaments and seasons in recent memory, not many expected Duke to be standing at the end. That role is somewhat new for Coach K. Duke was under the radar for much of the season, and entering the tournament they seemed to have the “easiest” road to the Final Four. Ask Kansas, Kentucky, or Syracuse if they would trade their regions now.
Watch the final moments of the title game again…
