The Cavaliers bid to secure home court throughout the NBA playoffs during the stretch run of the regular season will be one done without Shaquille O’ Neal, they learned Sunday. Shaq is set to undergo surgery on a sprained right thumb Monday, and is expected to miss between 6-8 weeks. He suffered an injury similar to this 15 years ago, then as a member of the Orlando Magic. That injury caused him to miss 22 games in the regular season.

With Shaq on the sidelines, the urgency to re-sign former Cav Zydrunas Ilgauskas becomes greater. ESPN.com reports today all signs point to Big Z returning to Cleveland, though there were rumors about both Dallas as well as the Atlanta Hawks having serious interest in the veteran. Ilgauskas is all for rejoining Cleveland, and with Shaq down currently, realizes this is a great opportunity to showcase what he has left for another contract extension at the end of the season. The Cavaliers have exactly 22 games left in their regular season, and sit on top of the NBA standings on March 1st at 46-14. That record gives them a 1 game edge over the Lakers for best overall, and a 6 game lead over the Magic for homecourt in the East.
