4 Things We Learned from Selection Sunday

by The Boss on March 15, 2010

The brackets are hot off the presses, and while the next three days will be full of debate over who should have made it, or where someone should be seeded, there are some answers to questions we now know about this upcoming NCAA Tournament.

1. Virginia Tech, Illinois, and Mississippi State weren’t good enough.
All three of these teams could put up a valid argument regarding why they have been invited, but at the end of the day, they all had flaws on their resume’ that you could not overlook. Jay Bilas of ESPN said it best on the college gameday show Sunday Night. This tournament is for the national championship. We shouldn’t be arguing over teams who didn’t help themselves by winning the games they were supposed to win.

2. Kansas and Kentucky received no favors.
Looking at the road to the title for the four 1 seeds, it is clear that the top 2 seeds have the toughest roads. Kansas has Ohio State, Georgetown, and Michigan State all sitting in their way. Kentucky, meanwhile, gets West Virginia, Temple, and Marquette among others in their bracket.

3. Syracuse will look to defy the odds.
No team has ever won the national title after losing their first game in their conference tournament. Syracuse, who is a number 1 seed for only the first time since 1980, will head out West to make history. Their road won’t be easy, and some look at their potential matchup with Gonzaga next weekend as the end of the road for Jim Boeheims crew.

4. There is no clear cut favorite.
Kansas may be the best overall team, but the road to the title for them is the toughest. Looking at the field, I can honestly see any of the following eight teams cut down the nets in a few weeks:
Kansas, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio State, Syracuse, Villanova, and Duke. Our official Final Four predictions will be coming later this week.
