About a year ago, as UConn was preparing for the NCAA Tournament, I remember hearing all the “experts” rave about the pro potential of Hasheem Thabeet, saying he was going to be a big time contributor immediately in the league. I remember as the NBA Draft drew nearer, I wrote this column, raising my doubts that Thabeet was “NBA Ready”, and that Memphis, whom I had predicted would take him, would be the best situation for him. 9 months later, it looks like I was right.
Thabeet was reassigned to the D-League late Thursday, becoming the highest pick in the league to ever get sent down to the minors. The former UConn standout has struggled to get a grasp of the speed of the NBA game, averaging only 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds a game in his rookie campaign. Memphis may not want to give up on a player they used the second overall pick on, especially when other guards like Tyreke Evans and Brandon Jennings are having great years, yet the word “Bust” may soon be seaping through the papers in Memphis if things don’t get better, fast.
