As the 2009-10 NBA Season tipped off last night, a classic battle in Cleveland went down without a notable piece to Boston’s puzzle. Glen Davis was not in uniform, and won’t be for the immediate future, after getting into a fight with a friend the night before the season opener. Davis suffered an injury to his thumb that required surgery, and will have him shelved for up to 2 months. While Boston added depth in the front court during the off-season in Rasheed Wallace and Shelden Williams, Davis afforded them the luxury of resting Kevin Garnett early in the season. The team, as expected, did suspend Davis, however, are looking forward for him to get back on the court and contribute to their title run.
Another player who did not see action on the court last night was the Cavs starting guard Delonte West. West, who has had his share of off the court troubles this summer, was made inactive by the team. West was in an altercation with his wife over the weekend, which resulted in a domestic violence report being filed. Earlier this year, West was also arrested for carrying three loaded firearms while riding a motorcycle. West’s replacement, Anthony Carter, filled in nicely, scoring 10 points in 40 minutes on the floor.
Perhaps the most impressive debut occured in Dallas, where Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas showed flashes of the Agent Zero who was an All-Star, and among the top scoring threats in the league before his injury. Arenas lit up the Mavs for 29 points and dished out 9 assists, in the 102-91 opening night vicotry over the Mavericks. Equally impressive for the new look Wiz was the play of Randy Foye, one of the newest members of the team, who dropped in 19 points. Dallas looked to be a repeat of years past, where Dirk scores a lot (34), gets little help, and comes up short.
Heading out West, the Portland Trailblazers started their 2009-10 campaign off right, with a solid 9 point victory over the Rockets. I gotta feeling it’s gonna be a long season for Houston….
Last, and certainly not least, the Staples Center was home to the Lakers/Clippers tip off, though the highlight of the night came before the game started. The Lakers received their rings, and these might be the most amazing ring design I’ve ever seen. The champs had greats from past Laker teams out there, even though some seemed less enthusiastic being there than others(Robert Horry). After that was done, Kobe did what Kobe does(33 points), and the Lakers held off the Clips.
