The 2009-10 NBA season is still months away, but there will be many storylines that will have us captivated around the league. One of which will be the health of Wizards star guard Gilbert Arenas. Arenas told the Washington Post his leg was feeling stronger than ever. He started his rehab being able to squat 80 lbs, and now that has jumped up to 315 lbs. The Wizards faithful are hopeful that the Agent Zero we saw just a few short seasons ago will be the one we see this year.
With Arenas healthy, and the remainder of the team in tact, how good can the Wizards be this year? In a conference where the best have improved(Orlando, Boston, Cleveland), and the talented young teams are making giant strides(Hawks, Bulls) the Wizards find themselves definitely a playoff contender, but what would constitute a successful 2009-10 season?
For starters, take a look back to the last time Washington made the playoffs. It seems so long ago that the Wizards were on the same level as the Cleveland Cavaliers, battling back and forth in the first round.
Since then, we have seen Cleveland improve drastically, while injuries have decimated Washington. The D.C Big 3 of Arenas, Butler, and Jamison know their window is quickly closing. Should the Wiz somehow fall short in the first round again this year, changes will be on the way next summer. Anything short of a playoff series victory would be a failed season.
Are the Wizards one of the four best teams in the East? We pretty much know who the first 3 are. Only time will tell if the Wiz can step up.
