The Orlando Magic are coming off the 2009 NBA Finals loss to the Lakers, but with the moves they have made this summer, many in Orlando expect the team to be a title contender next year, and for seasons to come. But it was just five seasons ago, things were much different.
The Orlando Magic were coming off of a horrible 21-61 season in 2004, in which Magic coach Doc Rivers was on the hot seat, and Tracy McGrady, who was in the prime of his career, was among the league leaders in scoring, but on the trading block. T-Mac had made it known to the Magic executives he was willing to go elsewhere, and Orlando knew the summer of 2004 had to be big for them.
Their summer started out great, with the team winning the NBA lottery, in which they drafted their franchise center, Dwight Howard. Then the trade happened.
Of course, things did not completely turn around with Francis in Orlando, however it was that deal that allowed the Magic the ability to construct and build the team you see today.
There are many teams in the same situation as Orlando this summer. Which one will be able to have the dedication and vision to see their plan all the way through?
