The 42 Million Dollar Mistake

Anderson Varejao
The Cleveland Cavaliers were desperate to make a big splash in the postseason. After being thoroughly outcoached and outplayed in the East Semifinals at the hands of the Magic, GM Danny Ferry seemed determined to alter the look of the franchise. Rumors surfaced early on about players like Trevor Ariza, Amare Stoudemire, Rasheed Wallace, and even Ron Artest, but none materialized into reality. Sure, the Cavs did trade for Shaq, but that alone would not get them over the top. It was widely thought that the Cavs would not re-sign Anderson Varejao, after Rashard Lewis made him look silly in the playoffs, but Cleveland did. Perhaps a desperate move, but a move that will come back to haunt the franchise for years to come. A player that is known for his hair and flopping as much as his energy off the bench was awarded with a 6 year, $42 Million dollar deal. Yes, those numbers are right.

With free agent forwards like David Lee, Paul Millsap, and even the Lakers Lamar Odom still out there, Varejao was brought back to the tune of $7 million dollars a year. Thats bascially a million a point. Cavalier fans reactions vary from anger to outrage based on the contract given to the forward. The Cavs agenda this summer was to upgrade their frontcourt. What grade do you give them for that?

That was my first reaction when I saw the deal Varejao signed, I can’t believe they signed him for that much $$$$$!
