The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/11/09
News broke this morning that free agent forward Paul Millsap had signed the offer sheet presented by the Portland Trailblazers, which is rumored to be a 4 year deal worth between $8-9 million a season. That news, compounded with word out of Chicago that the Carlos Boozer three team deal has fallen apart, has the Jazz in a tough spot.
Utah knew going into this offseason it was unlikely they could keep both Millsap and Boozer. Their intent was to re-sign Millsap, however most feel they wanted to trade Boozer first to clear some cap space. If they don’t match the Blazers offer, Utah may be more determined than ever to work something out with Chicago or Miami, the two teams thought to have the most interest in Boozer. If the Jazz are truly more interested at saving money than retaining Boozer or Millsap(saying their price tags are too high), then Tyrus Thomas along with a player or two from the Bulls may be a viable option for a trade.
In other news, it looks like Steve Nash will retire a member of the Suns. ESPN is reporting Nash and the team are in negotiations for a three year contract extension, with the annual salary ranging between $10-11 million per season. The Suns were able to bring in Channing Frye as well as re-sign Grant Hill, and with a healthy Amare Stoudemire, should be able to compete once again for the postseason next year.
With the Cavaliers losing out on so many free agents, fans of the Cavs shouldn’t be surprised by the Anderson Varejao signing, or the potential of them bringing back Wally Szczerbiak at a reduced price next season. Cleveland has expressed interest in former Suns forward Matt Barnes as well, and there are some grumblings that they will look at bringing in Glen Davis.
