The Lance Stephenson Watch Continues

in College

LanceStephenson-3In case you don’t know him yet, Lance Stephenson will one day very soon be on the cover of LayupDrill.com as much as Ricky Rubio, Blake Griffin and James Harden. Stephenson, a.k.a “Born Ready”, is one of very best high school ballers in the nation this year, but as of today, still does not know where he will be playing college ball this fall. If he is that good, why has no one signed him, you ask?

The NY Daily News reports that Memphis is leading the race among the remaining colleges interested in Lance, however that might be with good reason. It’s no secret that Stephenson will not be sticking around long in college. He will likely be the latest star to go to school for seven months, and use it as his personal audition for the NBA that year. More importantly though, are potential NCAA allegations that could hit Stephenson, and the program that decides to bring him in, around companies that have already done business with.

Schools like Arizona, Kansas, and Maryland have all decided against any further recruitment of the star. Why would those type of big time basketball first powerhouses not want a NBA-lottery type talent on their team, even if it was just for one season? Could there be more to the story than we know? The Memphis Tigers, in the midst of the allegations still simmering from the alleged SAT fiasco, are obviously willing to take that risk, and for Stephenson, that may be his best and only bet.

Unless more comes out I think this whole thing is overblown. I think alot of these schools are just trying to save face with their fans. Gary Williams needs all the help he can get but probably knows that he is not going to get Lance so he says he is not recruting him anymore. As a memphis fan I know that Lance would be accepted by the fans if Coach Pastner decides that Lance would be good for memphis and Lance wants to come here. Most people think that memphis is just being desperate but if you look at the players returning along with 3 solid recruits, Lance could be the player that makes a good team great.
