With The Cleveland Cavaliers down 3-1 to Orlando and the Lakers up 3-2 on Denver, does the NBA have a Plan B marketing strategy for the Finals? Before the regular season ended, people had been hyping up the Kobe vs. Lebron Finals matchup. The NBA marketing team had been feeding us that hype. They didn’t plan for the possibility of either the Cavs or Lakers not making it. The Cavs have been superb in the playoffs before this round, sweeping both the Pistons and Hawks. But King Jame’s crown began to lose it’s luster after losing the first game to Superman(Dwight Howard) and the Magic.
After Tuesday night’s loss, The league’s marketing department is scrambling to try to come up with SOMETHING, ANYTHING to hype up a Lebron-less NBA Finals. Kobe can’t do it alone and his supporting cast has been a non-factor. Some say fatigue or they are just being out hustled by the hungrier Nuggets. It doesn’t help that Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom have been a non-factor these last few games. Chauncey Billups said it best after Game 4 that the world wants to see a Lebron vs. Kobe NBA Finals, but he didn’t want to see it. Orlando is one win away from putting a monkey wrench into the NBA’s plans. It seems like they are desperate to fill the void that Jordan and Magic left back in the 90′s.
So what if there is an Orlando-Denver NBA Finals? I’ve already heard grumblings that people would not watch it. Too bad people have bought into the hype, otherwise it would be like watching JV Basketball. We don’t know where Amazing will happen, but Commissioner Stern and the NBA sure hope it will happen in Cleveland or Los Angeles!
