In what was one of the best regional final games in tournament history, Villanova needed every last second to get past the Pitt Panthers 78-76. Villanova, who had this game essentially won a few times in the final seconds, looked like they had choked away their opportunity to end the game in regulation, when Levance Fields nailed two clutch free throws to tie the game with 5 seconds left. But then, Scottie Reynolds made an amazing jump shot with .5 seconds left to propel the Wildcats to their first Final Four since 1985.
As we predicted earlier, the Wildcats backcourt came up big, and while DeJuan Blair played inspired basketball, and Sam Young literally put his school on his back for three weeks, it wasn’t enough. Villanova is the second team from the Big East to make the Final Four this year, as UConn joined them earlier with a win over Missouri. Villanova will face the winner of the North Carolina/Oklahoma game next Saturday.
