Gilbert Arenas has tempted fans of the Washington Wizards for the last few months there was a chance he would grace the floor of the Verizon Center sometime this season. In case you forgot, Arenas has not played at all this entire season, and the Wizards are in the middle of an forgettable 16-55 season. Though Arenas stated to Chris Miller of Comcast that he would only play in home games, and on the road against the Cavs. Arenas made the decision on when he was going to return, and what games he was going to play against, not Wizards interim coach Ed Tapscott, or Wizards management.
Is anyone surprised that the Wizards, who gave their franchise player over $111 million dollars to lead them to the promised land, now are at the mercy of that same player regarding the future of the franchise? I have personally been a fan of Gilbert Arenas for years now, but the reason why Agent Zero isn’t discussed in the same breath as Lebron, D-Wade, Kobe, or even Carmelo, is because of moves like this. If he was truly 100 percent healthy a few weeks ago, as had been rumored around the net, and he decided to only come back now, with a few games left in the season, was he hurting or helping his team? As the employer, who has no dominant figure on the bench to publicly call out his star player, what do you do? You have a lame duck interim coach who is trying to get this season over with as quickly as possible, and a fan base that is growing increasingly tired of an awful product on the floor.
To be a Wizards fan in 2009….gotta love it.
