In what has to be one of the stranger stories of the season, the deal that sent Tyson Chandler from the Hornets to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox is null and void this morning, after Chandler failed his physical on Wednesday. The teams heard about the news after their games Wednesday night, and Chris Paul, when speaking to reporters about it, said that the team” rejoiced” when they found out Chandler was heading back to New Orleans. So where does this leave the Thunder? Now that their deal for Chandler fell through, there is still thoughts that they may look for a last minute move for either Joe Smith or Chris Wilcox. Stay Tuned…
In other trade deadline news, NY Newsday is reporting talks have begun between the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks that could send Larry Hughes to the Knicks for Malik Rose and Jerome James. Hughes, whose contract expires after next season, will earn $13.6 million in 2009-10. Malik Rose contract is expiring, and Jerome James has a player option on his deal for next year.
The Bulls had talked to the Wizards, according to the Washington Post, about a deal that would send Larry to D.C for Etan Thomas and Mike James, but they wanted to shop around for a better offer.
The Knicks had also received an offer from the Kings to trade Stephon Marbury to Sacramento for Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas according to Newsday, but they rejected the deal, and opted to keep Steph. Perhaps they may think they will be geting a better deal today?
The Charlotte Bobcats and Portland Trailblazers entered preliminary talks also last night around a deal that would send Gerald Wallace and Sean May to Portland for Raef Lafrenz’s expiring contract along with Nicholas Batum. The Charlotte Observer reports that the Bobcats are not looking to move Wallace solely to save money, but rather if they get value back in return.
If you read today’s Newark Star-Ledger, then you will believe the Nets are going to trade Vince Carter today, and Nets fans may not be happy with what they get in return. Nets GM Rod Thorn is said to be in “dump mode”, and may be willing to take nothing but expiring contracts in return for giving up Vince. Carter, who is due 2 years and $33 million left on his current deal, is said to be almost expecting to get a phone call at any minute.
If you believe Danny Ainge, then you will not see the Celtics do anything today. The Boston Globe reports that Ainge has had talks with some teams about making some deals happen, but the numbers just were not able to work.
