After 16 seasons in the NBA, Alonzo Mourning announced his retirement today. It was only a few weeks ago that I pondered whether or not Alonzo Mourning was a Hall of Famer or not, and now that his career has officially come to an end, I feel it is only right to re-visit this topic.
Those who were close to Alonzo Mourning in the locker room have said he was the greatest teammate they ever played with. His passion for the game of basketball was second to none on the court, and his passion to help those in need was his true calling off the court. My first memories of Mourning came nearly 20 years ago, as Mourning was the dominant force in the paint for John Thompson’s Georgetown Hoyas. At the time, I was a huge Syracuse Orangemen fan(Remember Billy Owens?), and every time the ‘Cuse would play Georgetown on CBS I was glued to the TV.
Mourning would eventually leave the Hoyas and ignite excitement in Charlotte as the original face of their franchise. As his career continued, his roles on his teams changed, from being the go-to guy in crunch time, to simply a role player and locker room presence. I am thankful I had the opportunity to see Alonzo Mourning’s entire career, and his love for the game and competitive spirit will be sorely missed in the NBA.
