Acie Law Interview
A LayupDrill.com Exclusive
Words by D.Michael Lee
Most College Basketball fans remember watching Acie Law explode on the scene at Texas A+M University in 2005 and 2006. It was there that Law earned the named “Captain Clutch” for his knack at taking over games at will. Law made a epic 3 point shot to defeat Texas that I believe helped get Billy Gillispie his job at Kentucky. LayupDrill.com caught up recently with Acie to talk about life in the NBA, playing on the Atlanta Hawks, and advice he would give young players coming up today.
LayupDrill.com: Now that you have entered your second season, whats one lesson you learned as a rookie that you have implemented into your game now?
Acie:Conditioning. The NBA season is such a grind, it’s long and it’s very hard so it’s very important that you stay in great shape, which will allow you to compete with the worlds best athletes on a night to night basis.
LayupDrill.com: How is it playing alongside a veteran like Mike Bibby?
Acie: Its great. He’s a cool dude and since the first day he’s gotten here he’s taken me under his wing and taught me so much. Having him here is better preparing me for when its my time to take over the team.
LayupDrill.com: Describe how you felt on June 28, 2007, the night you were drafted by the Atlanta Hawks?
Acie: Best feeling ever. Accomplishing that is something that I will always remember and something no one can take from me. It also shows that anything is possible and I’m just so glad that my fiance’ and my parents where able to enjoy it with me.
LayupDrill.com:You are pretty active online, with an offical website, as well as a facebook and yardbarker page. How important do you think it is for players to talk to their fans online?
Acie: I think its very important people spend their hard earned money on tickets, jerseys, trading cards etc to support us the least we can do as athletes is show that we appreciate all the support they give.
LayupDrill.com:Growing up, who was your favorite team, and whats one moment that you always will remember in the NBA?
Acie: My favorite team growing up were the Sacramento Kings and something that ill always remember is getting to play in the playoffs as a rookie in Boston.
LayupDrill.com: How have you adapted to being on the road, sometimes weeks at a time?
Acie: It’s tough but you are doing what you love to do and getting to see different parts of the country that I normally wouldn’t see if I wasn’t playing. So I embrace the long travel try to enjoy it as much as possible.
LayupDrill.com: If you could tell some of the young high school and college student athletes reading this some advice what would it be?
Acie: Have faith in GOD and believe in yourself and anything is possible, people will always doubt you and say negative things but if you have those 2 qualities in the end when its all said and done you will be will be just fine.
LayupDrill.com: I read on your website you were putting together The Acie Law Charity Weekend back in your hometown of Dallas. Has that happened? Tell us about your charity?
Acie: The summer of June, 2009 I will have my first annual Acie Law Charity Weekend. We will have a lot of different events as well as workshops and event hands on with the kids. My charity is to give back and to create better avenues for families and kids who are need.
