Devin Harris: For Real?!

by Fred Richani on December 3, 2008

Devin Harris Jason Kidd

This past Sunday, a point guard who scored 47 points during the Suns-Nets game. Can you guess who?

Nope, not Steve Nash. And it sure as heck wasn’t Sean Singletary. Believe it or not, it actually wasn’t a Phoenix Sun.

It was New Jersey Nets point guard Devin Harris.

Yes, the same Devin Harris that was traded to the Nets last season from Dallas as part of the Mavericks send everybody for Jason Kidd deal. That Devin Harris was the one who dropped 47 points on the Phoenix Suns this past Sunday. Not bad for a guy who felt down in the dumps after being traded last season.

In fact, Devin Harris is quietly averaging nearly 24 points and six assists per game this season. It is very early in the NBA season, but if he keeps this up, then D-34 could be an All-Star before he knows it.

What people do not know is that Devin Harris could already be considered a veteran of sorts on the relatively young team of the New Jersey Nets (excluding All-Star guard Vince Carter). The Wisconsin standout already has playoff experience from his time in Dallas, including participating in the 2006 NBA Finals (albeit as part of the Mavericks’ choke job).

Harris not only brings playoff experience to the young Nets, but his much-improved game.

Perhaps it is the chip on his shoulder he has from being traded. Maybe D-34 wants to make Jersey forget about the Kidd, and step out of the enormous shoes left by the future Hall of Famer.

Whatever Devin Harris is doing to step up his game, it sure as heck has worked, as the Nets have now won seven of their last nine games. Forget the New York Knicks’ point-guard drama. Look across the Hudson, people. You will see a young point guard that has been lighting it up every chance he has got thus far.

Most Improved Player? All-Star? Playoffs—wait, PLAYOFFS?!

If Devin Harris continues to step up his game with the help of Vince Carter and the Nets’ supporting cast, all of the above can be achieved by the time this season is all said and done.

Deron Williams, Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, and Steve Nash will get all the attention.

But Devin Harris will eventually get your respect.
